The faculty begins its history since 1985, when the departments of zoo-engineering faculty began to form their respective departments. The candidate of technical sciences, associate professor, and later the first dean of the faculty, M.M. Kalashnik. The first two departments created were headed by Ph.D., Professors A.B. Baidevlyatov (Department of Fundamentals of Veterinary and Zohygiene) and II. Panicar (Department of Anatomy and Physiology).
The opening of the faculty was connected with the necessity to provide veterinary medicine specialists in the northeastern regions of Ukraine. At that time 75 students were admitted to the first course, now more than 700 students study at the faculty, 175 students are enrolled annually, 125 of them – for the state form of education, 50 – for the commercial one.
1988 was the year of formation of the faculty within the framework of SSGI, where there were such departments: Department of Virology, Microbiology and Bird Diseases (Professor Panikar II, Head); Department of Pharmacology, Clinical Diagnosis and Internal Noncommunicable Diseases (headed by Professor A.Bidevlyatov); Department of Obstetrics and Surgery (Head Professor VA Osetrov); Department of Epizootology and Organization and Economics of Veterinary Affairs (Head of OJ Milenko); Department of Parasitology and Veterinary Expertise (headed by Professor Romanenko PT). Subsequently, the Department of Anatomy, Normal and Pathological Physiology (headed by Professor Yaroshenko VI) was formed.

Since 2005 the faculty has been headed by Candidate of Economics, Associate Professor Alexander Nechiporenko.
Educational and scientific work at the faculty today focuses on the departments of obstetrics; surgery; therapy, pharmacology and clinical diagnostics; Virology, pathanatomy and bird diseases. Professor Panikar II; anatomy, normal and pathological physiology of animals; epizootology and organization of veterinary business; parasitology and toxicology; veterinary-sanitary examination, microbiology, zohygiene and quality and safety of livestock products; chemistry; physical education and veterinary medicine clinic.
Due to the close cooperation of the teaching staff with the regional department of veterinary medicine headed by OA. Vlasenko, teachers have the opportunity to conduct practical classes on the basis of the best agricultural enterprises of the Sumy region, in the laboratories of veterinary medicine, laboratories of veterinary and sanitary examination in the markets, as well as in processing enterprises, which ensures complete mastery of the training programs and the acquisition of students by appropriate students.
There are 11 specialized research laboratories at the Faculty: beekeeping, poultry farming and taxidermy.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has a separate educational building with a total area of ​​about 5000 sq.m. In the two-storey building are located all 6 chairs. The building has 4 lecture rooms for 150 seats each, 5 arenas for animal manipulation, 20 specialized classrooms, operating, virological, microbiological and others; 2 computer classes, Internet access, and the rest of the area is allocated according to the needs of each department. During the years of the faculty’s development the departments were equipped with modern equipment, which helps to educate the future veterinary medicine specialists in a qualitative way. The students of the faculty can acquire practical skills of work on the basis of the SNAU Equestrian School and the University Vivarium, which holds 10 heads of cattle, 50 pigs, 20 horses, 10 sheep, 100 heads of poultry, etc., in three private veterinary clinics, as well as Sumy state clinics with which the relevant cooperation agreements have been concluded. The Faculty employs 14 student research groups, employing about 220 students. The topics of the circles are related to the scientific direction of the department.
There are 14 professors and 40 associate professors who provide the teaching process. Training of specialists is carried out in the licensed specialty: “Veterinary medicine” (211) and “Veterinary Hygiene, Sanitation and Expertise” (212).
